William (Bill) Turko

December 31, 1919 to June 29, 2013

After a long full life, our Dad Bill, at the age of 93, passed away peacefully with family at his side.

Dad is predeceased by his parents Fred & Katherine, nine siblings and his wife, our Mother Rosalie who passed in 2009.  He is survived by his sister Sophie Turko and his children, son Eric, son Ken and his wife Myrna, daughter Noreen and her husband Jim Woods, daughter Vivian (formerly Pascucci) and her husband Nikia Chartofylax.  Dad is also lovingly remembered by grandchildren, great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Dad was born in the Alonsa area of Manitoba. The family lived in several southern Manitoba communities over the years to return to Alonsa where his parents eventually retired.

As a young teenager during the Depression, Dad and his brother Pete rode the rails west to find work and help support the family. Dad served in the Army during WWII and was proud to be part the Rocky Mountain Rangers Infantry Regiment.  While in the army dad and mom, Rosalie Kruk became engaged.  After the war Dad returned to Manitoba marrying Mom in 1946 where they resided in Winnipeg and started their family. It was in Winnipeg that Dad started his lifelong carpentry career. In 1951 with two little sons in tow, they purchased a small farm on the Hoop and Holler Bend near Portage la Prairie.  Their family continued to grow with the addition of two daughters.  Dad continued carpentry in the Portage area eventually retiring from Construction Engineering CFB Portage in 1985. Dad and Mom were fortunate and happy to live out their lives on their farm.

Our Dad will always be well known for being a kind, hardworking generous man devoted to his wife, family and friends.

We would like to thank everyone who contributed to ensuring Dad’s independence until his final days.  Anyone wishing to contribute memories, stories or anecdotes may so at www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com

Prayers will be held 7:30 pm Sunday, July 7th, 2013 at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. The Mass of Resurrection will be at 11:00 am Monday, July 8 th , 2013 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church.  Interment to follow at Hillside Cemetery.
