William Joseph Higgins

Peacefully, on Tuesday, September 15, 2015, William Higgins passed away at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 86 years.

He was predeceased by his parents Irene and Milford Higgins; first wife Eva; infant daughter; son Paul; brothers Fred, John and Ted; sister Nora Mannion; brother-in-law Joe Mannion; sisters-in-law Helen, Hazel, and Shirley; step-son Blaine Sokolosky.  William is survived by his beloved wife Evelyn; step children Lynn and Larry Warantz, Danny and Linda Sokolosky, Laurie Smith, Allan and Shirley Sokolosky, Terry and Ingrid Sokolosky, Leanne and Leonard Revet; children Rosanna Hersak, Penny Higgins, Stephan Higgins and Mary Higgins; sist er Irene Joyce and Pentii T aivainen ; brother Thomas; sister-in-law Doris Higgins; 10 grandchildren and several great grandchildren; special friends Alex and Carol Fraser, Eila and Norm Sigurdson and Lois Burke.

William enjoyed riding his motorcycle with his border collie Daisy.  He also loved horses, music, dancing and reading.  He was a gentleman – and a gentle man.  William loved to laugh, love, and was patient man but was also stubborn.  Over the years he was a conductor on the CP Railroad, cowboy and welder/millwright.  William owned and operated Galtwelding in Galt, ON and also a shop in Glenboro, MB.  In his younger years he played hockey on a school team in Stratford and also had a milk run.

Visitation and viewing will take place at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Friday, September 18, 2015 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm.  Funeral service will be held at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 10:00 am led by Pastor Larry Bird.  Interment will take place at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in William’s memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 200 – 310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6.
