Walter James Smith
Peacefully at his home on Long Plain First Nation, after a courageous battle with cancer, with his family by his side Walter Smith passed into the spirit world on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at the age of 70 years.
He leaves to mourn his wife Brenda; children Jerry (Ashley), Cory, Jesse (Waneta), Carl; children he raised as his own, Anne (Donnie), John (Julia), Richard (Katherine), Brenda Lee (Alex Kanski), Sandy (Joe Frommelt), Christine Cleaver (Raymond); many grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother Morley (Louise) Smith and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Walter is predeceased by his parents John and Margaret Smith; sisters Lorna Smith and Mary Smith.
He was born in Portage la Prairie on July 17, 1943. Walter worked for Bill Roberts for a few years and did a few odd jobs in-between, then worked for J.P. Wiebe and Sons as a potato farmer and also in the Wiebe’s chicken barn. In his spare time to make money he went around collecting scrap and copper. In the evenings Walter loved to take the boys hunting. His major love was to be with his family, kids and grandkids.
Traditional Wake will begin Friday, July 19, 2013 at 4:00 pm at Long Plain Spirit Lodge. Traditional Feast and Service will take place on Saturday, July 20, 2013 beginning at noon. Interment will follow at the MacGregor Cemetery.
