On Sunday, April 11, 2010, Mrs. Viccie Cassidy of Portage la Prairie died peacefully at the age of 90 years. Viccie was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on July 2, 1919. As a young person, she attended various elementary schools and Daniel MacIntyre Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg, where she participated in many school activities, particularly the Gilbert and Sullivan production, "The Gondoliers". She was also active in sports and was room representative for the school yearbook. She graduated in 1936.

Viccie was also a member of Maryland United Church and Knox United Church in Winnipeg, and participated in the church choir, Mission Band, and C.G.I.T. Music was one of her special interests, and with tutoring from Ethel Kinley and Berythe Birse, she sang in many ensembles and choirs.

She met George Cassidy while employed at Northern Electric, and they were married on September 7, 1944. Together, they raised three children: David (living in Nelson, BC), Nancy (deceased), and Jane (living in Edmonton, AB). Viccie was a member of Sweet and Low Singers, which was later known as Carillon Singers. Along with her husband, George, she was a longtime, active member of Prairie Players and the Portage Duplicate Bridge Club. Viccie volunteered at the Portage Library, participated in charity canvass drives, and enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting, sewing, and raising houseplants.

Viccie was predeceased by her husband George in 1994 and by her daughter Nancy in 1957. Besides her children, David and Jane, she also leaves to mourn, her grandchildren, Sean Cassidy and Patrick Cassidy.

In memory of Viccie, there will be a tea at Dalton Estates in Portage la Prairie for her neighbours and friends on Saturday, April 24, 2010 beginning at 1:30 pm. A Facebook page has been created in her memory.
