Vernie Clifford Smith
Peacefully on September 6, 2013, at the age of 79, Vernie Clifford Smith passed away in his home with his devoted wife of 53 years, Loreen Smith by his side.
Predeceased by his parents Charlie and Mary Louise Smith and brothers William, Joey, Gerold, Thore, Clarence, and sister Vera.
Survived by his 4 children, Doris Bartsch (Denis/Walter), Vernon Smith, Ronald Smith (Chantale), and Ann Lowry (Bruce). He also leaves his cherished memory to his 10 grandchildren; Rhea, Danielle, Emma, Lucassie, Tatianna, Cole, Shelby, Sandy, Marcus, Aaron and Bradley. Along with many nieces and nephews, he is survived by his three loving sisters, Gloria, Linda (Alphonse), and Grace (Neil) and brother Eddie.
Vernie was born on October 16, 1933 in Portage La Prairie, MB. Before retiring at the age of 58, Vernie worked as a commercial fisherman briefly, and then devoted 33 years of his life working for PFL Foundations as a drill rig operator and foreman (837). He and Loreen also opened their home and hearts to many foster children and took pride in their property at the Manitoba Narrows, where they lived for 10 memorable years before moving to Portage.
Vernie loved to spend time with his family and friends. An avid outdoorsmen with a green thumb, and a delight for entertaining, Vernie will be remembered for his patience, warmth and open heart.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at Good Shepherd Roman Catholic at 1:00 pm led by Rev. Eric Giddins.
As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Vernie’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba – Portage Office, 103 Wilkinson Crescent, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1A7.
