Stanley Frank Johnson
After a courageous fight with cancer, Stanley Frank Johnson passed away at the Portage General Hospital on Saturday, November 3, 2012.
He was born in Winnipeg to Frank and Winnifred Johnson on April 29, 1929 and was the eldest of five children. Stan was predeceased by his parents, brother David, (infant grandson) Avery Moran and granddaughter Jacqueline Lawson. Leaving to cherish his memory, are his loving wife Victoria of 61 years, son Barry (Jo-Anne), daughter Kathleen (Greg) Lawson, daughter Brenda (Kim) Moran, son Robert ( Marg) and grandchildren Jeffery Lawson, Jennifer, Natasha and Eric Moran and Ian and Taylor Johnson. He will be sadly missed by his brothers Ron (Audrey), Brian (Cheryl) and sister Joan (John) Urchenko, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Stan was not one to shirk his responsibilities. At the age of nineteen and the passing of his own father, he along with his mother took over the family business Johnson's Cartage. He was later joined by his brother Ron. He spent many wonderful years in the transport business in the Manitoba area. Upon the selling of the business, a career in insurance at the Portage Mutual beckoned him and he never looked back.
Stan always enjoyed meeting and helping others while serving the public in one way or another. While raising his own family, he became a scout leader and enjoyed watching these young lads grow into young men and fathers.Over the years, Stan was an active member of the Eastern Star, Masons and Shriners. He loved motoring around in his "tin Lizzy" in parades. His grandchildren always felt special riding side by side with grandpa. Stan was always ready and willing to participate in degree work and was very conscientious and meticulous. He has been the installing officer for every Masonic body for which he was a member both at the local level and at the Grand or provincial level. He continued in this position for several orders and always maintained a degree of excellence that will be difficult to match.
Stan was also a long time member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of Canada and served for many years on the Board of trustees for Trinity United Church where could be seen at his regular post as an usher on Sunday mornings. Stan loved camping with his family and in later years with the trailer group. Golfing and curling kept him active and out with people. Stan was a gentleman to all and had high expectations of himself and others. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Special thanks to Dr. Rice and the palliative care team who helped to make a stressful time bearable.
