Gerald Thunderbird Sky

Peacefully on Friday, December 9, 2011, Gerald passed on to the Spirit World at the age of 54 years.

He was predeceased by his father Alvin Merrick, brothers Douglas, Reginald and Terry Merrick and sister Andrea Merrick.

Gerald will be lovingly remembered by his wife Gerri Thunderbird Sky; mother Edna Merrick; siblings Liz Merrick, Roger Merrick (Sandra), Hazel (Jim) Allan, Sandra Merrick (Marvin), Rosalind Merrick (Orville), Freida (Alvin) John and Warren (Arlene) Merrick, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; children Cheryl (Colin), Gerand (Monica), Gerald (Jessica), Jonathan, Minwaa Binesi and Indaanis; grandchildren Raissa, Tia, Liam, Belle, Geron, Rhianna and Sophie; stepchildren Samantha (Jon), Jeremy, Melissa, Brad, Kelly and Evan and stepgrandchildren Jada, Jonathon, Julian, Faye, Tristan, Aaron, Mya and Aliese.

Gerald grew up in Long Plain and attended school in Portage and Brandon, MB. He later attended Yellowquill College and received his diploma in Business Administration. Before his illness, Gerald worked as the Cultural Coordinator for Long Plain First Nation.

Gerald was well known for his prairie chicken dance. From a very young age, Gerald danced fancy, grass and traditional. He beaded his own outfits and helped those who needed his expertise. Gerald was a pipe carrier and performed ceremonies when asked to. He will always be remembered for his dedication and contribution to our cultural traditions.

Gerald maintained his sense of humor until the very end. He fought so hard to stay with us but he is now free from his pain and suffering.Gerald will be deeply missed by all, especially his wife Gerri, his children and grandchildren whom he cherished with all his heart. Gerald will live forever in the memories we shared with him.

The family would like to thank Dr Quesada, the medical staff at Portage District General Hospital, Portage Ambulance Services and McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel for the care that was given to Gerald. Miigwetch!

Wake will be held at the Long Plain Spirit Lodge on Sunday evening, December 11, 2011 beginning at 4:00 pm. Traditional Feast and Funeral to follow on Monday, December 12, 2011 commencing at 12 noon.

Ceremony led by Lawrence Henry.

Honourary pallbearers are those who loved him and those who were gifted by him.

The pallbearers are Joe Longclaws, Marvin Daniels, Malcolm French, Dennis Meeches, Ken Daniels and Tyrone Roberts. Burial will take place at Merrick Cemetery.
