Shirley Storey

June 17, 1931 — April 22, 2017

Shirley Grace Storey (nee Carr)

June 17 1931 – Apr 22 2017

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend.

After a brief illness, Mom passed away peacefully at Minnedosa hospital at the age of 85.  She was predeceased by her husband George Storey, parents Cy and Mabel Carr, brother and sister-in-law Robert and Martha Carr, in-laws Thomas and Kathleen Storey and great granddaughter Ryann Glenda Bohn.  She will be sadly missed by her children: Heather (Ray), Scott (Sheola), Patrick (Twyla), Kathy (Barry) and Alison (Gord) and nephew Terry Carr.   She will always be cherished in the hearts of her 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Born in Portage la Prairie, Mom stayed her entire life in the area – moving to Brandon in 2014.  She was a full time mom, part time music teacher (to other children, never her own!) and was always involved in the West Curtis Community.  Mom also worked for 25 years as a juvenile corrections officer at the Agassiz Youth Centre.

Family was her greatest passion and she had a close relationship with each of her children and grandchildren.  Grandma was our biggest cheerleader and supporter.  She spoiled her grandchildren with special desserts, homemade jams and pickles, gifts and cards – with her smiley face signatures.

Mom’s other passion was sports – it didn’t matter what sport – she kept up with hockey, baseball, basketball, tennis – and could keep up with any sports fan.  Her favorite teams were the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Blue Jays.   She even made the trek out to Toronto in 2015 during their play-off run, accompanied by grandchildren, to watch the Jays live for the first time in her life.

Shirley will be deeply missed by her family, friends and neighbours.  Her warm and caring nature and unwavering support and love for her family and community will never be forgotten.

In accordance with her wishes a private graveside service will be held.

Friends desiring may contribute in her memory to Minnedosa Palliative Care, Box 960

Minnedosa, MB  R0J  1E0 or to  Maple Grove Cemetery, Ste. 42, Comp 9, RR3, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3A3.

To love a Mom and then to part,

Is the greatest trial to the human heart.

Years of striving, little of play,

Loving, giving, the whole of the way.

A cherished smile, a heart of gold,

To the dearest Mother the world would hold.

Happy memories, fond and true,

From us who thought the world of you.

Beautiful memories are treasures ever,

Of happy days when we were together.

With aching hearts we whisper low,

God Bless you Mother, we’ll miss you so.

Father in Heaven hear our prayer,

Guard my Mother with tender care.

Be a good Shepherd, don’t leave her alone,

Love her as we loved her

When she was here at home.

God made a wonderful mother,

A mother who never grows old,

He made her smile of the sunshine,

And he moulded her heart of pure gold.

In her eyes, he placed bright shining starts,

In her cheeks, fair roses you see.

God made a beautiful mother,

And he gave that dear mother to me.

A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.
