Sheldon Philip Hiltz

April 10, 1947 — September 21, 2024

Sheldon Hiltz died Saturday, September 21st while holding his wife’s hand.

Sheldon was born in 1947 in Prince Abert, Saskatchewan. He was raised in Lynn Lake, Manitoba, which became the backdrop for many of Sheldon’s stories. An avid storyteller, Sheldon, then dad, then Papa, regaled his loved ones (and in fact anyone who would lend an ear) with stories of his time in the north and his travels around the world. He loved to talk about the people he met and the experiences he had - all of which shaped the person he was.

Sheldon was never known to move quickly (his family called it “Papa speed”). He approached tasks in the same way - slow and methodical. Because of this, he could always be counted on for a reasoned, thoughtful piece of advice, though only if you asked for it.

Sheldon had a long career serving others, both professionally and as a volunteer. A counsellor by training, he held a number of public health positions, including most recently Executive Director of Community Health Services for the Regional Health Authority. Over the years, Sheldon was active in the Kinsman Club, at one point serving as National Secretary. He also was a member of the Rotary Club and served a number of terms on the Southport board of directors, first as a Director, then as Chair. More recently, Sheldon was involved in efforts to chart a path for the future of the Manitoba Developmental Centre (MDC) campus. After retirement, Sheldon got certified to teach English as a second language and volunteered as a teacher with newcomers in Portage, and with students internationally in India, Costa Rica, and the United States.

Sheldon retired early in life, he was a youthful 56 years old. He wanted more time to spend with his family, including his emerging grandchildren. Despite the physical distance, Papa created a special and unique bond with each of his grandkids and gifted them with an invaluable perspective on life, and our family history and heritage.

Sheldon left a profound mark on those who knew him. He had an easy humor and a genuine love for those around him. He radiated a warmth and acceptance that drew you to him like a magnet. Sheldon was preceded in death by his mother (Mae), father (Pat), and brother (Randy). He is survived by his wife Sue, his daughters Barb (Brian) and Bonnie (Dave), brother Garth (Marge) as well as 4 grandchildren, Oliver, Mackenzie, Eva and Hannah. We also want to recognize the many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who made Sheldon’s life so full.

We love you Papa.
