Shareen Roberta Joy Cook
nee O'Brien
After a lengthy struggle with cancer, with family by her side, Shareen Cook passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 61 years.
Shareen is survived by Bruce her beloved husband of 20 years, her mother Doreen O’Brien, brother and sister-in-law Roger and Pat O’Brien, sister Shari Saunders, nieces Dawn O’Brien and Jaime Gresser, great niece Alexis and great nephew Jayden. She was predeceased by her father Robert William O’Brien of Portage.
Shareen was born in Welland, Ontario and raised in Fonthill. She came to Portage and became part of the business community managing Sooter’s Studio and developing her photographic skills. Later she purchased and managed the Copper Kettle a unique gift shop in the Portage Mall.
Shareen and Bruce met in Shilo at a Regimental dance in1992 prior to Bruce’s deployment to Cyprus for 6 months. They kept in contact with letters and calls and then married August 6, 1993.
Shareen was stage manager and a valued assistant of Candlelight Productions Dinner Theatre. She was a member of the Army Cadet League of Canada and was presented a voluntary service medal. Her passion for baking provided the Farmer’s market with a lively table where friends would gather and taste the results. Shareen loved travel and enjoyed many trips and cruises.
Shareen will be forever loved by friends and family.
As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Shareen’s memory to the Sunset Palliative Care, Box 92, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 3B2, or to Central Plains Cancer Care Services, 318 Saskatchewan Ave. E., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8 or to a charity of choice.
