Roxane Marie Meeches
(Black Eagle)
March 1,1976 - December 19, 2010
Our beautiful angel took her last breath and entered the spirit world on December 19, 2010 with her loving family by her side. Rox was such a courageous, brave and humble person. She was predeceased by her great-grandparents Ben Meeches & Jean Meeches, grandparents Herbert Daniels, Gladys Meeches, Alfred Roulette & Mabel Roulette, her aunt Debbie Meeches, uncle Morris Meeches, nephews Benjamin Cedar Meeches and Sheridan Joel Star Bunn-Meeches and niece Elizabeth Angel Meeches. She leaves to mourn and will be deeply missed by her ever-so loving parents mother Rita Meeches and father Mervin Roulette(Darlene); sisters Farah, Tannis (Jerry), Amanda and Shanna; brothers Mervin (Melvina), Joel (Connie), Shaun (Melissa), and Ethan; 14 nephews, 7 nieces and her very special nephew Baby Mervin whom she called "her baby"; special cousins she considered as her brothers and sisters Joanna Meeches, Anita Roulette, Duane Roulette and Christopher Meeches; special uncle Brian Daniels (Linda), uncle Dennis (Michelle), aunties Doreen and Jane; her very special friends Melanie Yellowquill, Rob Merrick and Brad Anderson; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends too numerous to mention.
Rox was born in Portage la Prairie, MB and lived most of her life in her home community of Long Plain First Nation. She went to school in Long Plain, Brandon, Portage la Prairie, Winnipeg and Lebret Sask. After receiving her Gr. 12, she enrolled in the Certified Aboriginal Financial Management program at Yellowquill College. She made few attempts to complete this program but had to withdraw for medical reasons each time. Rox was diagnosed with Leukemia at the tender age of 17. She was given the gift of life (Bone Marrow Transplant) in 1996 from Lucille Giroux of B.C., granddaughter of late Chief Dan George, who ironically happened to be her 'idol' when growing up. Because she was determined and had the strongest will to live she battled this disease and beat it until a 2nd cancer developed in May 2010. Everyone knew Rox had a heart of gold, always there to give a helping hand and so many times volunteered herself in the community. She was awarded a 'Volunteer of the Year Award' and also won her theme "Shaken up the Rez" for Rez Radio in Long Plain. Rox was a gifted and talented young lady who always made sure that her nieces and nephews were pampered and focused on for birthdays and on special occasions for Christmas, Easter, Halloween, and Valentines. She made many people, young and old, feel special by always acknowledging them on their birthdays or by comforting them during sad times. Since Rox was a little child, she loved people of all walks of life, regardless of age, race or gender and took it upon herself to take the less fortunate under her wing at times. Her favourite pastimes were mothering Baby Mervin, reading, writing poems, listening to music and watching movies. During her final days, she was the one who comforted us and showered us with all her strength and our beautiful angel promised to watch over us. Rox left us with so many loving special memories that will always be cherished, always to be remembered and never to be forgotten.
Wake will be held at 4:30 pm on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at the Long Plain Spirit Lodge. On Thursday, December 23, 2010 the Traditional Feast will begin at 1:00 pm followed by the Funeral Service at the Long Plain Spirit Lodge. Burial will take place in the Dauphin-Myerion Cemetery.
Thank you Dr. Howden who took care of her from the beginning, Dr. Kinear who also cared for her towards the end and gave all his support in a very kind understanding way, Dr. Rubinger and Dr. Vialett of Cancer Care Winnipeg, the nurses in Portage District General Hospital medical ward (especially Jen) and the nurses who took such great care of Rox in Health Science Centre on H5 Ward until her passing.
