Peacefully on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, Ross Hicks passed away suddenly at his home at the age of 77 years.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Isabel; son Daryl (Tamara) Hicks with grandchildren Alex (Kristy) and Dominic; great grandson Bennett; daughter Pam (Bob) Taylor with grandchildren Kaelyn (Josh), Lane and Brett; brother Murray (Helen) Hicks; sister Myrna Dring; Sister-in-law Helen (Mel Hicks); Sister-in-law Fern (Bob) Thompson; Brother-in-law Glen(Joanne) Pettypiece, and other extended family and friends.
Ross was born on November 6, 1940 in the Turtle Mountain area. He was the middle child of Alice and Aylmer. He went to school in Ninga. He loved all sports but mostly hockey and excelled at baseball. He met Isabel and they were married on Oct 15, 1960. Together they owned and operated the Hi-way Lunch restaurant in Boissevain, he was the cook and Isabel waitressed and did all the pies and baking. After that they moved to Brandon where Ross worked for Kullberg’s Furniture for several years. It was here that they started their family, Daryl in 1965 and Pam in 1967. In 1977 Ross and Isabel made a big decision and moved to Portage la Prairie where they started Delta Home Furnishings with partners Zenen and Marlene Parfeniuk. Ross was a very hard worker and had a fabulous memory for people. Customers he had sold to 10 years before would come back and he would greet them by their name. They traveled many places on furniture buying trips and made lasting friendships. In 1999 Ross retired and spent time enjoying gardening, golfing, curling and watching all his grandchildren in their sporting events. He returned to work part time with JS Furniture and Best Sleep center to fill his days and continue his connections with new and past customers. Family was very important to Ross, he was devoted to his family and friends, was very generous and had a great sense of humor.
We wish to extend our sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses and support staff at Portage District General Hospital.
A celebration of Ross’ life will be held on Monday, May 14, 2018 at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel at 1:00 pm. A private family interment will take place at the Evergreen Memorial Gardens Columbarium.
