Richard Charles Locke

We regret to announce the passing of Richard Locke on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 69 years.

Richard is survived by his wife Lou; daughters Carol (Jason) and Heather (Mike); aunt Florence Manning; sister-in-law June Gray; brother-in-law H. Trenholm (Elaine); cousins B & D Purdy, Frances Purdy, Darcy Purdy (Sheila) and many more cousins and nieces and nephews.

Richard was predeceased by his parents Norman and Audrey Locke; brother Darrell; in-laws Lloyd and Ruth Trenholm; sister and brother-in-law M. N. Bachmeier; sister-in-law Rosemary Trenholm; aunt M. and uncle R. Purdy; uncle Burt Manning and aunt Irene and uncle Henry Wiegel; aunt A. and uncle E.  Colingridge.

Richard was born on December 14, 1945 in Birtle, MB.  He lived on the family farm and attended school in Ekford, Rossburn and Shoal Lake, MB.  After graduating  in 1963 he went to work for the Royal Bank in New Dale, Selkirk, McCreary, Souris, Flin Flon and finally Winnipeg.  While in Souris he met Lou Trenholm.  They were married on September 9, 1967.  Married life started in Flin Flon, and then they moved to Winnipeg.  In July, 1968 he left Bank work as the assistant secretary-treasurer for the Town of Boissevaian in the RM of Morton.  In June 1974 Carol (Jason) was born and in October of 1974 the family moved to MacGregor where he became secretary-treasurer for the Village of MacGregor.  From 1990 to 2001 Rick was CAO for the RM of Portage la Prairie where he worked closely with the City of Portage and Central Plains Inc.  In 2001 he retired.  He always said “retirement was the best job he ever had”.

The family years were spent in MacGregor where he and Lou raised their daughters.  He spent endless hours coaching and driving the girls to school functions or any number of sporting events they participated in.  It was said “any wonder I wore out a set of tires travelling around the province”.  These years he also continued many hours volunteering for the Lions Club in the Village, playing slow pitch, golfing and curling.

As a young kid he played hard ball “only sissies played softball”.  He did play a bit of hockey but “I wasn’t a good skater but they put me in front of the net because I had soft hands”.  Later he curled in the men’s league in MacGregor, Portage la Prairie and the MCA in Winnipeg.  Lou and Rick also enjoyed many great hours of mixed curling and even had a lot of success much to the surprise of other competitors.  During these years there were many family trips to Clear Lake, Banff, Lake Louise, Expo, Disneyland, Caribbean cruise, Niagara Falls and the Badlands.  As the girls set out on careers he and Lou travelled to Thompson, Repulse Bay, Nunavut, Fort Smith, Yellowknife and Whitehorse.  As the sons-in-laws Jason and Mike entered the picture trips were made to Moncton, NB, Bishop Falls, NFLD to see “where these boys came from”

When Rick retired he enjoyed many more hours of volunteering with Service for seniors, CMHA, Portage Hospital Foundation and the Portage Golf Club.  He also loved going to watch his much loved Portage Terriers.  Often travelling to Dauphin, Selkirk and Steinbach to see playoff games.  He really enjoyed the RBC Cup held in May of 2015.

Visitation and viewing will be held at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Thursday, June 25, 2015 from 7 pm to 8 pm.

A Celebration of Richard’s Life will be held at William Glesby Centre on Friday, June 26, 2015 at 11:00 am. Family and friends are invited to dress casual or in golf attire. Interment will take place at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
