Phyllis Joyce Murdock
(nee Cook)
With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Phyllis Murdock on Thursday, April 15, 2010 in the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 62 years.
She was predeceased by her husband Norman Murdock, mother Caroline Cook, daughter Mary, brothers Alfred and Tommy and sisters Lydia and Dorothy. Phyllis is survived by her son Cornelius, grandchildren Litonya, Shenelle and Tyler and sister Jemima Cook of Portage la Prairie.
Phyllis was born in Koostatak, Manitoba on July 12, 1947. She spent her early years in Fisher River First Nation where she met and married Norman Murdock and had two children Mary and Cornelius. Phyllis came to live at the Manitoba Developmental Centre for several years where she made many wonderful friends. In July of 2002 Phyllis chose to move into the community with her best friend Frannie. They have shared a home and friendship right up until Phyllis' passing.
Phyllis was a very hard worker. She made beds at the MDC (and continued on for a while after she moved into the community), spent time working at SAM Incorporated and Portage ARC. She was supported by many organizations over the years: most recently by PK Apartment Program, Portage General Hospital and ACL Portage.
Phyllis had a great sense of humor and loved to tell or hear a joke. She often played pranks on her good pals Keely, Tanya and Christina. Phyllis was very loving and those closest to her often got a daily giggle over her many cheeky comments followed by a quick I love you.
Phyllis loved spending time with people. She attended several churches over the years, often two or three a week. She loved singing, dancing, doing crafts, cruising and getting into mischief whenever she found a good opportunity. Phyllis was known and loved by many people in the community and was someone that it only took meeting once to make a lasting impression. "DON'T GET ME STARTED!"
Service to celebrate Phyllis's life will be held at St. Mary's la Prairie Anglican Church on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 11:00 am led by The Venerable Norman Collier.
Interment is to follow at a later date at Fisher River Cemetery, Fisher River First Nation, Manitoba.
As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Phyllis's memory to Portage District General Hospital Foundation, 524 Fifth St. SE, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 3A8 or to a charity of your choice
