GERTRUDE NORA MCDERMID
(nee CADE)
Suddenly, but peacefully on the 15th of June, 2015 at her residence in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Nora passed away at the age of 79, a month shy of her 80th birthday.
Nora was born to parents Fred and Florence Cade on July 13th, 1935 in Stonewall Manitoba. She grew up the seventh of ten siblings, educated and raised in the St James area of Winnipeg until she married in 1952. Nora married Archibald Gordon McDermid. Due to Gordon's career in the Forces, as a military wife, Nora travelled and lived in numerous locations between Canada and the U.S.A.. Edmonton. Calgary, Winnipeg, Southport, Portage la Prairie, Washington. D. C. (Virginia), working various jobs, Canex, Woolco, snack bar and office work on base and assisting at the Officers Mess Hall. Most of her time was spent raising their 7 children.
Nora thoroughly enjoyed bowling, playing bingo at the Army Navy, puzzles, playing or teaching her grandchildren some piano, playing Nintendo (she could beat the best of them), star and planet gazing, listening to/watching old movies, reading/watching mystery novels/shows, stripping old furniture/painting, finding great deals at yard sales, and long conversations. Rarely did you find her without her cup of tea. Nora also found joy in donating to various charities.
Nora was predeceased by her beloved husband Gordon in 1994, her parents Fred and Florence, her twin daughters Florence and Francis in 1958, her son Gordon (Gordie) in 2013, her brothers Jack (Edith), Fred and Stanley, sister Winnie (Ernie) Dutson, brothers- in-law Cliff Broughton and Ben Bronstein, sisters-in-law Jean and Gail Cade and sister-in-law Muriel.
Nora is sadly missed by her children and grandchildren: daughter Ruth (Mike) Mancusi; (Tammy, Tony, Steven); son Glenn (Christine) (Troy, Janick); daughter Gail (Randy) Potter, (Allan Sokolosky) - (Kelly, Kimberly, (Fernando), Amanda, (Dave); son Kevin (Tania) (Justin (Melissa), Chad, Tyler, Kyle (Amber); daughter Sheila (Brad) Mellen, (Courtney, (Chris) Miller, Bradley (Breanne) Mellen; son Chris (Barb); sister Joan Broughton, brothers Charlie, Ted (Pat), Bob (Val), Ken (Shirley), as well as 19 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces (great), nephews (great) & friends.
A private family graveside service will take place. Family and friends are invited to attend A Celebration of Life honouring Nora on Wednesday, July 8th, 2015 at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel 56 Royal Rd. S. Portage la Prairie at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers and in memory of Nora donations may be made to a charity of choice. A special thank-you from the family for the many condolences received.
