It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nicole Elaine Simard on December 17, 2024, at the age of 68. Nicole was born on November 1, 1956, in Barrie, Ontario. As an Airforce BRAT, she lived in four different provinces before settling in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, where she made her home. Nicole worked for over 33 years at the Manitoba Development Centre, where she built lasting relationships and was respected by all who knew her.
Nicole was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was particularly proud of her grandchildren, always taking a keen interest in their lives and achievements. Nicole had a special love for animals, particularly her beloved dog Jax, who passed away this year. She found great comfort from her pets. Nicole also enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, including attending Saturday morning garage sales and playing bingo—activities that brought her joy and allowed her to connect with others.
Nicole was known for her strength and resilience. She faced every challenge with determination and a fierce spirit, always bouncing back no matter the adversity. Nicole was a true fighter, and her courage in the face of struggle will forever be remembered.
Nicole is survived by her husband Andreas Wahn, her daughters Natalie (Tyrol) McFarlane of Edmonton, AB and her Stepdaughter Ulia Wahn of Brandon, MB. Her grandchildren Tyrol, Magnus and Aurelia McFarlane. Her sisters, Lise (Yves) Blanchette of Airdrie, AB, Michelle (Antonin) Koprnicky of Airdrie, AB, and Jean-Marc Simard of Airdrie, AB. Aunt Shirley (Terry) MacDonald of Halifax, NS, Gloria (Ed) Noseworthy of Oshawa, ON, and Marie Wright of Ottawa, ON, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Nicole was predeceased by her sister Danielle Simard Sweetland, Sister-in-law Catherine Simard, and her Parents Gilles and Rose Simard.
We extend a special thank you to Dr. Nelson and the Dialysis Unit at the Portage General Hospital for their exceptional care and support throughout Nicole’s many journeys. Their compassion and dedication meant the world to her and our family.
