Nadia Shewchook

February 2, 1930 — March 1, 2015

Nadia Elizabeth Shewchook

(nee Nychka)

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Nadia Shewchook announces her peaceful passing on Sunday, March 1, 2015 at the Holy Family Personal Care Home in Winnipeg.

Nadia was born February 2, 1930 in Halicz, Manitoba.  She was the second of five children of parents Mike and Effie Nychka.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Bernard Shewchook and Sherlyn Shewchook (Fred Bosiak); grandchildren Marla Griffiths and Stephane Shewchook and great grandchildren Xandria and Manni Griffiths.  Also left are her brothers Don Nychka, Dennis (Anna) Nychka and her sister Audrey (Roman) Batiuk.  Also mourning her loss are numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

Nadia is predeceased by her husband Morin Shewchook (July 1999), daughter Linda Janzen (January 2011); parents Effie and Mike Nychka and brother Murray Nychka.

Nadia went to Drifting River School for grades 1 and 2.  The family moved to the Ashville area where Nadia completed grade 8 at Vista School.  She went to Ethelbert to grade 11 and then to St. Andrews College in Winnipeg to complete her grade 12.  Due to a severe shortage of teachers, Nadia took a short summer course which enabled her to teach at Garland School grades 1 to 4 for one year.  She went on to Winnipeg to take a secretarial course and was hired to work for a brokerage company, Ames and Company, for one and a half years.  Her career was cut short, as she was needed at home to assist her mother who was not well at the time.

While at home, Nadia met and married her husband Morin Shewchook in 1952.  They lived in Winnipegosis for 3 years, and then moved to Portage la Prairie in 1960 where they raised their 3 children.  Nadia worked at the Campbell’s Mushroom Farm as an office manager and sales for 21 years until she retired in 1987.

Our family would like to extend sincere thanks to Dr. Connolly and the staff at Holy Family Personal Care Home for taking such good care of our mother.

Funeral Service to celebrate Nadia’s life will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2015, at 11:00 am with viewing prior to the service at 10:00 am at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. The service will be officiated by Father Michael Skrumeda. Interment will take place at a later date at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Nadia’s memory to the Cancer Care Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 (204) or to a charity of your choice.

A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.  204-857-4021 www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
