Norma "Lorraine" Vicars

With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Norma Lorraine (Lori) Vicars (nee Whitney) on Monday January 31, 2011 at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 78 years. She leaves to mourn her loving husband of 56 years of marriage Ken: two children, Brett (Carol) of Poplar Point: Wendy (Scott) of Flin Flon: Grandchildren, Nathan (Maggie) Vicars, Bryant & Randi Webb: Great Grandchildren Ryland & Trenton Vicars, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Lori was predeceased by her parents Wesley and Thelma Whitney and her son Lance.
Lorraine was born January 14, 1933 in Winnipeg, MB to Wesley and Norma Whitney. She attended school at General Wolf and Daniel MacIntyre and after graduation she worked at several different jobs. She met the love of her life, Ken while working at Powell Equipment. They married July 3, 1954 in Winnipeg, living there for a few years, before moving to BC. Their first son Lance arrived April 20, 1958. After they moved back to Winnipeg, Brett was born on October 9, 1961 followed by Wendy on February 24, 1966. Lori and Ken moved with their young family to Poplar Point where they lived for 34 years helping out at the local rink.
Lori's hobbies included sewing, gardening, canning, baking and caring for her pets Boots and Max. She was so proud of her flower gardens and there were many! She would start plants right from seed in her green house until her health started to diminish. Lori always enjoyed a good laugh. She taught 4-H and Sunday School for many years and attended church at the Poplar Point Alliance Church. She was a member of the Grant Memorial Baptist Church and was baptized there. She enjoyed singing in the choir in Winnipeg, also at funerals and special church events.
Lori loved her children and grandchildren, and family always came first.
Funeral Service will be held at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Thursday, February 3, 2011 at 1:00 pm. led by Garth Ronald. Lori will be laid to rest beside her son Lance at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Lorraine's memory to Canadian Diabetes Association, 200 a�" 310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6 or to Youth For Christ, 60 Tupper Street N., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1W8.
