Myrtle Margaret Lang
(nee Martin)
We regret to announce the passing of Myrtle Lang on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the age of 89 years. She was predeceased by her husband Bill Lang and brother Harold Martin. Myrtle will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Paddy (Rick) White; son Brent (Sherree) Lang; granddaughter Taylor Lockhart-Lang; nieces, nephews and all those who knew her.
Myrtle was born on January 1, 1924 in Lavenham, Manitoba. She came to Portage in Fall of 1940 at age 16 and began her working career in the Mayfair Hotel coffee shop for three years (1941-1944), Eatonʼs Grocery and Mail Orders Department for 16 years (1944-1960) and the Bank of Nova Scotia for 33 years (1960-1991). Myrtle married Bill Lang June 8th, 1949. Together they enjoyed travelling to Spain, Africa, Hawaii (5 times), Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales and the United States. Bill passed away July 22, 1978.
Myrtle was active in her community, giving of her time and talents. She joined the Royal Purple Lodge #66 January 1953 and was a Life Member of the Lodge receiving 3 service pins – her 50 years in 2003, 55 years in 2008 and this past January 2013 her 60 year service pin. As a member of Trinity United Church she belonged to Unit B of the U. C. W. and was Past President and Treasurer. She became a member and volunteer of the Herman Prior Senior Centre as well as a volunteer of the Portage Soup Kitchen, Heart & Stroke Foundation, and the C.N.I.B (Blind).
Myrtle was a good friend to many. Two of her long time good friends Olwyn (Stocke) Rogers and Grace (Gracey) McLeod predeceased her. She loved life and found joy in her flowers, her pets (cats, dogs, and birds), and sports, music, and dancing. But for Myrtle, her children and granddaughter were most important in her life.
A Celebration of Myrtle’s Life will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2013, at Trinity United Church,15 Tupper Street S., Portage la Prairie at 1:00 pm led by Rev Beth Kerr. Interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery.
