Murray Young passed away at the Portage General Hospital on June 21, 2019 after a brief illness at the age of 90 years.
He leaves to mourn his passing his loving son Darryl and grandson Ryan of Langley, British Columbia as well as nieces Anne Teghtmeyer and Wilma Shirriff (Bill) of Portage la Prairie, and their families. Cousin George Greenlay had a close connection through the years. Other relatives in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario will remember family reunions and gatherings with lots of stories and ice cream.
Murray was predeceased by his parents Ernest and Elvira Young, and brothers Gardner, Frank, and Harvey, and sisters Orma, Ada and Vira. The deaths of his daughter-in-law Margaret (née Smart) and granddaughter Danielle in a car accident on January 22, 1991, affected him deeply.
He was born on February 1st, 1929, and attended Cochrane School and the Portage Collegiate. Murray was a long time farmer in the High Bluff area and resided in the family farmhouse until moving to the Oddfellows Towers eleven years ago. Some years ago he travelled several times to the United States and liked to share stories of those trips. He was a keen observer of life around him and noticed and remembered details including the birthdates of family members. His years at the Towers were pleasant for him and he appreciated the friendship offered there.
Private family committal will take place on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 followed by a reception at the Oddfellows Towers, 51 Royal Road North, Portage la Prairie where the family will welcome anyone wishing to share remembrances of Murray. The lunch gathering will take place from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in Murray’s memory to Trinity United Church, 15 Tupper Street S, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1W7 or Sunset Palliative Care Inc, Box 92, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 3B2.
