It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden yet peaceful passing of Monte Latimer Boddy of Oakville, Manitoba on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at the age of 71 years. He was predeceased by his parents Melvin and Chestine Boddy, parents-in-law John and Maud McCallister and brother-in-law Marvin McCallister. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 43 years, Shirley; sons Kelly (Frances) Boddy and Darcy (Tanya) Boddy, all of Oakville; grandchildren Paige, Shane and Desirée; sister Kathryn (Bob) Gillis; sister-in-law Mildren (Brian) Cotton; brother-in-law Bob (Joan) McCallister; many nieces, nephews and numerous friends.
Born June 12, 1943 in Portage la Prairie, MB, Monte grew up and resided in Oakville, MB his entire life. After graduating from high school in Oakville in 1961, he gradually took over and grew the family farm, transforming it from a mixed livestock operation into a grain farm. Monte and Shirley were married in 1971 and made their home on the farm, raising their two sons along the way. His farming career would span 40+ years before transitioning into semi-retirement but his passion for farming and his desire to help his boys succeed meant that he still remained active on the farm for many years afterwards.
Monte possessed a great sense of humor, and always loved a good joke. Hiding behind a big tough exterior was a teddy bear inside. Over the years he was active in a number of ways in the Oakville area, serving the community club, curling club, skating rink and local United Grain Growers board to name a few. He enjoyed history, aviation, books, movies, gardening and in his younger years curling. A good BBQ gathering with family and friends was always one of his favorite pastimes, and in recent years he looked forward to the near daily trips with Shirley to Portage to join friends for coffee. Monte touched the lives of many people and will be dearly missed.
There will be a visitation from 7:00 to 8:00 pm on July 15, 2014 followed by a gathering to celebrate Monte’s life on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at 1:30 pm with Reverend Shirley McLaren officiating - both to take place at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel in Portage la Prairie, MB. A private interment will follow at the Oakville Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Monte’s memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 200 – 310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6, or to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba – Portage Office, 103 Wilkinson Crescent, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1A7 or to a charity of choice.
A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. 204-857-4021 www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
