Melvin Grant Warren
Mel was born on 21 July 1943 in Treherne, Manitoba and peacefully left us to join his loved ones on 26 Sep 2014. He was predeceased by his loving wife Nita, his father and mother Walter and Kathleen Warren, his sister Jean, his two brothers John and Douglas and his granddaughter Gabriel. He leaves behind his sons Michael, David, daughter Denyse, his other sons Timothy (Pam) and Michael O’Toole (Jen), and his grandchildren Rhett and Ryan Palas, Arron and Shannon O’Toole, Marcus, Malcolm, Conrad Warren, Anna Warren and Kailey O’Toole.
Mel grew up on a small farm in Holland, Manitoba. After attending high school, he enlisted in the RCAF in 1962 and enjoyed a 33-year career as a fighter pilot, flight instructor and flying search and rescue missions in NWT. Retiring at the rank of Major, Mel accomplished many unique achievements that include logging over 10,000 flying hours and the honor of flying her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip to their private Canadian retreat. He was an inspirational leader who still holds the admiration of his peers.
After retiring he settled in Portage la Prairie with his wife Nita. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing. He worked at MacDonald’s Sporting goods and generously volunteered to UCT Council #923, Children’s Wish Foundation and Central Plains Cancer Care.
Mel was always one for a quick quip. If he didn’t aim it at you, he would aim it at himself. All he wanted was to see your smile and better yet to hear your laugh. He was fortunate in that he was able to answer the alarm clock and know that he was going to work and would be doing something he truly enjoyed.
His greatest joy was spending time with his friends and family, and grandchildren.
