Mavis Esther Hoehn (nee Esslinger)

March 21, 1940 – October 11, 2017

With great sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Mavis Hoehn on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Portage District General Hospital at the age of 77 years.

Mavis will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Yvonne Bresnahan of Gladstone, MB and grandchildren Robert, Michael (Kayla), Brand (Nicole), Daniel, Alana (Blaine), Kathryn, Shannon and Benjamin; her daughter Marianne Woods (Keith) of Portage la Prairie, MB and grandchildren Charlotte (Eric), Wayne, Dylan, Nicole (Brett), Amy (Carter) and Marlin; her daughter Laura Ricker (Todd) of Brandon, MB and grandchildren Alyssa and Nicholas; 3 great-grandchildren Aiden, William and Claire; her sister Joyce Petznik (Armen) of Kelowna, BC; her brother-in-law Frank Hoehn (Judy) of Camrose, AB; and her nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Mavis was predeceased by her husband Allan, parents Michael and Elizabeth Esslinger and her sister Phyllis Miller.

Mavis was born in Roblin, MB and grew up on the family farm.  Following her high school graduation, she completed a short training program to become a permit teacher.  She taught for one year in Grassy River School and then married Allan.  They farmed in the Waldersee area until 1975, at which time they moved to Langruth, MB to operate the local hotel establishment.  Following Allan’s death, Mavis moved to Portage la Prairie, MB.  Mavis enjoyed crafts, baking, walking and seniors’ excursions until her deteriorating health began to limit her activities.  She was quiet and reserved, and enjoyed time spent with family.

The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care Mavis received from Portage Home Care, Lions Prairie Manor Adult Day Program, and Portage District General Hospital.  Your kindness during this difficult time is appreciated very much.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 16, 2017 at McKenzie’s Portage Funeral Chapel at 1:00 pm with Rev. Julie Baker officiating.  Interment will follow at 4:30 p.m. in the Christ Lutheran Church Cemetery at Waldersee, MB.

If friends so wish, donations may be made in Mavis’ memory to the Portage District General Hospital Foundation, 524-5th Street SE Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3A8.
