Marie Dorothy Kirkup
(nee Millar)
Peacefully on Sunday, December 15, 2013 at Douglas Campbell Lodge, Marie Dorothy Kirkup, passed away at the age of 63 years.
Marie was born on August 2, 1950 to Keith and Dorothy Millar at Deloraine, MB. Marie married James Kirkup and together they had two children, Kelly and Kary. Marie and Jim resided in Waskada and Pierson, before moving to Portage in 1989. Marie was very involved in her church, Bible studies, and Christian Women’s Club. Marie loved spending time with her family, both immediate and extended and loved when the grandchildren came along. Her house was transformed into blanket forts, or cup houses whenever the grandchildren were over as it was all about having fun and being silly. She loved to read her bible, do jigsaw puzzles, rug hooking, and paintings, play the piano and sing, and sometimes volunteering at personal care homes as a clown. Marie and Jim enjoyed trips seeing many parts of Canada, as well as trips abroad.
Marie was predeceased by her parents, Keith and Dorothy Millar, parents-in-law Cecil and Eva Kirkup, brothers Everett and Don, sisters-in-law Maureen and Ruth.
Marie leaves to cherish her memory: husband Jim; daughter Kelly (Dave) Foley, grandchildren Kaitlin, Brett and Luke; son Kary (Suzanne) Kirkup, grandchildren Karissa and Tyler; brother Larry (Darlene) Millar, sister-in-law Donna Millar, brothers and sisters-in-law Bill (Sheila) Kirkup, Bob (Lennie) Kirkup, Wilma (Mel) Clifford, Tom (Lorraine) Kirkup and many nieces and nephews.
Many thanks for the care and compassion from Dr. Hedden, Dr. Zacharias and the DCL Staff.
Viewing and visitation will take place on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 from 7 pm to 8 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. Funeral service will be held at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel, on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 1:00 pm. Interment will take place at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Marie’s memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 21 Royal Road South, Portage la Prairie, R1N 1T8 or to Douglas Campbell Lodge at 150-9th St. SE, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3T6.
"He Only Takes the Best"
God saw she was getting tired
And a cure was not to be.
So he put his arms around her
And whispered, “Come with me.”
With tear-filled eyes we watched her
Suffer and fade away.
Although we loved her deeply,
We could not make her stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
Hard-working hands put to rest
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best.
