Peacefully at Portage District General Hospital Maria Buck passed away on February 9, 2010 with her son and daughter-in-law Tony and Nancy, daughter Darcey, granddaughter Jerilynn Wood, great granddaughter Ashleigh LaPerle, brother Charles Payette and niece Roxy Sanderson by her side.
Maria was born in 1927 at Haywood, Manitoba to Joseph and Amanda Payette and was raised in the Layland District on the family farm. In 1947 she married John Joseph Buck and they raised their family in Portage la Prairie.
Maria was predeceased by her parents; husband John; two infant sons Basil and Jackie; three sisters Ruth Dack, Kathleen Borley and Ida Smith; and four brothers Martin, Damus, Maurice and Robert Payette. Maria is survived by her son Tony and his wife Nancy along with their children (Shannon and Shawn Van Wallegem and their family of Winnipeg; Bre Quantril and her family of St. John's Newfoundland; Jerilynn and Abe Wood and their family of High Bluff); her daughter Mossan Reed and her children (Vicky and Chris Billard and family; Jackie and Sean Beaulieu and family; and Alana Reed all of Medicine Hat; Andrea and Joe Lecourtois of Calgary); and daughter Darcey and her children (Melvin Cook of Portage, Amanda Cook of Winnipeg and Christian Buck of Vancouver, BC). Also left behind are 13 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; one sister Margaret Huddleston and one brother Charles Payette of Portage as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Maria enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting and especially crocheting slippers for her family until a stroke took the ability to do so away. She enjoyed working for home care from which she retired many years ago. Maria was strong in the Roman Catholic religion and attended St. Hyacinths for many years.
Prayers will take place at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 7:00 pm led by Deacon Bill Parrack. Funeral Mass will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church on Friday, February 12, 2010 at 11:00 am with Celebrant Father Eric Giddins. Interment is to follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
