Mabel was born on April 7, 1915, daughter of Jane (nee Nichol) and Sidney Keele at Winnipeg, MB and had her schooling at Edwin, MB. She moved to the Mill Creek District in 1931 residing with her two brothers, Jasper and Albert. On August 29, 1937, she married Stanley Wylde and their marriage was blessed with one son and three daughters. Stan and Mab resided on the family farm for 56 years and after Stan’s passing in 1993, Mab continued living in the farm home for another 18 years. She resided at the Lions Prairie Manor for the past 3 years.
Mabel was a hard worker both inside and outside the home. In her younger years, she kept busy knitting, sewing, baking, gardening, and cooking for her young family and the farm’s hired hands. She loved family gatherings and hosted many parties in the family home. As the family grew, she raised schnauzers and corgies and volunteered yearly at the Portage Fair. She sewed extensively for her children, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren. Well into her 90’s, she was still making her own bread and buns. She loved music and played numerous instruments by ear. She made the world’s best chocolate chip cookies and could “shop till she dropped” putting many a young person to shame. She was an avid reader, doll collector, quilter, and scrapbooker. Her family was her life and she did for others before doing for herself.
Special thanks are extended by the family to the staff at the Lions Prairie Manor for their exceptional, loving care of our Mom/Nana. She loved to introduce many of the caregivers as ‘her friend’.
Memorial Service will take place at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Friday, January 10, 2014 at 2 pm. Private family interment will take place at Oakville Cemetery.
