Lorna Sanders

January 8, 1925 — May 21, 2019

Our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother Lorna died peacefully at Seven Oaks Hospital, Winnipeg, on May 21, 2019. Predeceased by her husband Ron, infant son David Ronald, brother Forrest Rankine, all her sisters- and brothers-in-law and her nephew John. Lorna is survived by her daughters Jennifer Antymis (Gene), Gloria Saunders, Nancy Sanders (Ann Naylor) and Patty Sanders (David Wolanin); her grandchildren and their families Andrew, Jenny and Mae; Megan, Don, Connor and Carson; Alison, Ian, Holly and Malcolm; David and Jessica; Katie and Cody; nieces and nephews Lynn, David and Patricia Rankine, and on Ron’s side Ron, Mary Ann, Barbara, Beth, Mary, Margie, Eric, Craig and Bryan; and by loving friends and neighbours from over the years.

Born in Hartney, Manitoba, and raised in Shoal Lake and Manitou, Lorna attended Normal School in Winnipeg and taught at Gowncroft and Snowflake Schools before training in Occupational Therapy at the University of Toronto. She worked as an OT in Pontiac, Michigan, Rochester, Minnesota, and Deer Lodge in Winnipeg. She married Ron in 1949 and they moved to Portage la Prairie, where they began to raise their family. In 1958 they moved to Beausejour and became active in church and community life. They retired to Winnipeg in the mid-eighties, where their church involvement continued and Lorna became a dedicated volunteer with several organizations. Eventually they moved to the Courts of St. James, and after Ron died Lorna moved to Lions’ Place and then Amber Meadow Retirement Community.

Lorna was a loving Mum, Grandma, Great Gran, aunt and friend, always putting others before herself. She will be remembered with love and admiration for her sharp mind, her ready humour, her listening ear, her way with children, her love of animals, her patient kindness, her defense of the underdog, and her persistent concern for the well-being of the world.

Interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery in Portage la Prairie. A service celebrating Lorna’s life will be held at Immanuel United Church, 755 Golspie Street, Winnipeg, on Saturday, June 1st, at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Ha Na Park presiding.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the residents and staff at Amber Meadow; Christine Smith, R.N., and Dr. Raubenheimer at the Assiniboine Clinic; Dr. Heinrichs and the staff of 3U4 at Seven Oaks General Hospital as well as the Geriatric Rehab Unit; and the Pastoral Care Team and congregation of Immanuel United Church, for their care and kindness over the past few years.

In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for donations in Lorna’s memory to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank or the Winnipeg Humane Society.

A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.  www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
