Surrounded in presence and heart by his loving family, Les peacefully passed in his 91st year on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, at the Lions Prairie Manor in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.
Loving father of daughter Joan (Rick) and son Gerald, and proud grandfather of granddaughter Karen and his great grand daughters Grace and Renee, and proud grandfather of grandson Daniel (Jodi), cherished brother of Cecil, Arnold (Marlene), David (Millie) and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by wife Noreen, parents Tom and Annie, Sisters Alice and Evelyn, brothers Percy, Russell, and Donald.
Les had a fulfilling career for 35 years with the Manitoba Telephone System taking him to many places within Manitoba to work. After retirement he enjoyed many years staying active playing several rounds of golf daily in the summer and enjoying a special day when he scored a hole in one with his grandson Daniel, winters were spent bowling in 5 pin bowling leagues and curling on many teams and weekend bonspiels. Being a huge sports fan dad could be found watching the Terriers play hockey, fastball at Republic Park and a weekend away in Winnipeg with his son Jerry watching the Goldeyes play ball. He also enjoyed taking his grandkids to the horse races at the fairgrounds.
Les had been an active member of the International Order of Oddfellows for many years, volunteering with the Saturday bingos.
Les was a quiet, generous man with quick wit and always a kind word and a contagious smile. His independence was such an admirable and strong trait, especially during the later years when dad no longer drove his car but could be seen at various locations around Portage cruising on his scooter, sometimes occupying a lane on Saskatchewan Ave.
Family gatherings were always a cherished time whether we were celebrating a holiday or a birthday milestone, the evening would be capped off with a game of cards, with dad’s easy going and gentle spirit always letting someone else win. He will be deeply missed.
Our family would like to thank the many homecare workers that helped us care for dad for the last couple of years in his home and the past 5 months to the staff at the Lions Prairie Manor.
A private family service and interment to be held later this summer. A slideshow will be available to view on Les’s obituary page on the McKenzie website.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Portage Services for Seniors, 40A Royal Road North, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1V1 or a charity of your choice.
