Lena Schmidt

With great sadness we announce the passing of our mother Lena Schmidt, who went to be with her Lord and Saviour on Saturday, March 28, 2020 at the age of 91 years.

She was born on August 15, 1928 to Justina and Gerhard Bergen, the fourth of seven children. The family spent there early years in Hochfeld Manitoba moving to the Elm Creek District in 1936. She attended Wingham School for 6 years and worked on the family farm. At the age of 16 she moved to Winnipeg and worked several different jobs including an optometrist, The Grain Exchange, and a dry cleaners.

She was baptized in 1948 on confession of her faith. On June 1, 1952 she married Peter Schmidt and they spent their first few years living in Winnipeg, before moving back to the Wingham District to begin farming in 1959.

They enjoyed there years in this community farming from 1959 till 1996. During the years on the farm she was also active in her community, driving school bus, working on a Hobby Farm, teaching in the local 4 -H Club and in the Sunday School at Newton Community Fellowship Church.

In 1983 she was part of the original organizing committee of the Portage MCC store and she volunteered there faithfully in several capacities till the year she passed away.

In 1996 they retired from Farming and moved to Portage la Prairie. She loved to be active and involved and in addition to her volunteering at MCC she also volunteered at Herman Prior Centre .

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Peter Schmidt, and is mourned by her children Kathy Klassen (Arthur), Judy Schmidt, Bertha Schmidt, and Norman Schmidt (Heather), five grandsons, six great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

A private family burial took place at the Oakville Cemetery and a memorial service will be held on a future date.
