With sadness and heavy hearts we announce that Lena Meeches left on her journey to the Spirit World on Friday, January 1, 2021, at the Portage District General Hospital, at the age of 81 years.
Left to cherish Lena’s memory are her partner Cecil Paul; children Kerry (Peggy), Daryl, Freida, Brenda (Ken), Sandra (Loreen), Larry, Arlene, Randal, Sherry (Dean); siblings Delores Meeches and Phyllis Myran; best friend Marguarite Prince; 32 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.
Lena was predeceased her spouse David McKinney; her parents Ben and Jean Meeches; siblings George, Mervin, Gladys, Dorothy, Wally and Raymond; children Kimball, Sharon, Darren; grandchildren Riley, Sherman and Mia; great grandchildren Jeanette, Summer and Aniyah.
Lena was born on January 21, 1939 in Portage la Prairie. Lena grew up in Long Plain First Nation and raised her children there as well. In her younger years she would often find work harvesting to help support her family, in particular she loved going to the United States to harvest potatoes in the fall. She was a residential school survivor. Lena was a Sundancer and loved living the traditional way of life. She enjoyed sewing and making star blankets and playing Bingo. Lena loved to cook and bake and spending time with her partner Cecil playing cards and going garage saleing, she also loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Wake will be held on Tuesday, January 5, at the Long Plain Spirit Lodge. Traditional services will be held on Wednesday, January 6 at the Long Plain Spirit Lodge. Burial to take place at the Dauphin Myerion Cemetery.
