On Monday, May 13, 2013 Katie Ann Peters “Skates” passed away at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 72 years.
Skates is survived by her children Pastor Sheila YellowQuill (Ogima Peter YellowQuill), Shelley (Doug) Solvason, Sheri (Peter) Courchene, Kendrea Peters, Jeff Meeches, Anastasia Olson, Kevin Peters, and Chief David (Geraldine) Meeches; her siblings Phillip Myran (Mary Tizzard), Lawrence (Lorraine)Myran, James Myran, Helen Myran, Donna Bartlett (Dave), Theresa Sanderson and Maureen Sinclair. She was predeceased by her husband Clarence Peters; son Montgomery Peters; parents Andrew & Florence Myran; sisters Louise Meeches, Ethel Macainnon and Agatha Myran; brothers Royce Myran and Luke Myran; and one granddaughter Nicole Peters
Katie is best known for her kindness, gentleness, meekness, and love for all. She was the main link to our family unit and was always there to listen and encourage all of us. Some of Mom’s work history includes: Cara-Foods Operations, Reliance Co. Plastic, Midwest Garments Factory, MDC, Housekeeping at Westward Village Inn, farm laborer and foster parent with LPDOCFS. Mom enjoyed life: raised pigs and cattle; known across Canada for her leather and beadwork crafts and she travelled to numerous places to sell her crafts with one of her most liked places to go sell being Sandy Bay where she made many friends; gardening and caring for her many house plants; sewing; cooking; and preparing for garage/bake sales. She also enjoyed attending church, special gospel meetings and listening to Long Plain Gospel Hour. She had many pets with the last companion being ‘Muffy’. In her last days she enjoyed spending quality time with her daughters Sheila, Shelley, Sheri & Kendrea and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Special helpers who provided home care for Mom were Ian Merrick, Joshua YellowQuill, Long Plain Medical Drivers, Home Care staff, Maureen Sinclair L.P.N., Dr. Rizk, Doug Solvason, Robert Merrick, Kevin Peters, Peggy Meeches, Donna Beauchamp, and Portage Hospital Staff. The family thanks all who have loved and cared for our Mother.
Wake Service will be held at Long Plain Spirit Lodge beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2013. Funeral Service will begin at 12 noon on Friday, May 17, 2013. Interment to follow at YellowQuill Cemetery
Pallbearers will be Doug Solvason, Kevin Peters, Robert Merrick, Jamie Roulette, Jeff Meeches, Chief David Meeches, Jamie Bartlett, Shane Myran, Harry Sanderson Jr. and Joshua YellowQuill Casket Leader will be great grandson Ian Merrick Family considers all Moms family and friends too numerous to mention as honorary pallbearers.
