Karen Adrene Sokalski (nee Dixon)

With her family at her side, Karen Sokalski (nee Dixon) passed away on July 28, 2013, in Portage la Prairie at the age of 71 years.

Karen’s family was the most important part of her life and she was happiest when surrounded by them. She will be greatly missed by her beloved husband John of 47 years, along with their two children David Sokalski and Laurie (Dan) Dubé. She also leaves behind her grandchildren Andrew, Susan, Chantal, Caitlin and Brooke-lyn, one sister, Margaret Izzard and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents Robert E. and Laurie M. Dixon (Armstrong).

Karen was born, February 23, 1942, in Souris, MB, where she grew up and completed grade 12. She worked as a telephone operator in Souris and later went on to obtain her teaching certificate at Brandon Teacher’s College. She held several teaching positions throughout Manitoba. She met her husband John in Gimli, MB and they married in Souris, MB on November 27, 1965. Both their children were born in Pine Falls and over the years they also made their home in Flin Flon, Treherne, and Portage la Prairie. Karen loved a great game of bridge with her many close friends. Her other interests included golfing, reading a good romance novel, traveling and socializing with family and friends.

The Funeral Service will be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 36 2nd Street SW, Portage la Prairie, MB on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at 1:00 pm, with a reception to follow.

As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Karen’s memory to Central Plains Cancer Care Services, 318 Sask.Ave.E, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N OK8 and St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 36-2nd St.SW, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 2A1.
