Peacefully on Saturday, January 30, 2010, John Schmidt, son of the late John and Martha Schmidt, passed away in the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 79 years.
John lived in the Wingham area near Elm Creek where he received his elementary and high school education and also attended Winkler Bible Institute for one year. In August of 1949, John was baptized upon confession of his faith and received into membership at Newton Manitoba Church (now CFC). He enjoyed farming, playing hockey, baseball and Rook. He also enjoyed watching local hockey.
After suffering a stroke and later a heart attack, John was admitted to the Portage District General Hospital, where he received excellent care.
Predeceased by his parents and brother-in-law John Enns, John is survived by two brothers Nick of Portage la Prairie and Rudy (Helen) of Elm Creek; three sisters Jessie (John) Froese of Elm Creek, Mary Enns of Portage la Prairie and Martha (John) Pauls of Headingly; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and their families.
Visitation and viewing will take place at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. Funeral Service will take place at 2:00 pm in the Community Fellowship Church, Newton (60007 Rd 27 W) Wednesday, February 3, 2010 led by Rev. Ramsy Unruh. Family and friends are invited to the burial prior to the service at 1:00 pm at the Oakville Cemetery.
The family would like to express our sincere thanks to the nurses in the Extended Care Unit of the Portage District General Hospital and the doctors. Your kindness to John was much appreciated by him and also his family.
