John H. Murray
Our beloved husband, father and grandpa passed away on Wednesday September 21, 2011 at St. Boniface Hospital.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 48 years Nina, children Cindy (Jake) Kok, Jacquie (Casey) McCuaig and Ryan Murray; grand children Michelle and Travis McCuaig, all of Portage; brother Gerald Murray, sisters Yvonne (Wilf) Donaldson, Joan Hollins; sister-in-law Florence Zeibin and many nieces and nephews.
John was predeceased by his parents Martin and Muriel Murray. His sisters-in-law Margaret Murray and Valerie Hawkins, and brothers-in-law Fred Zeibin, and Peter and Paul Remizoff.
John was born December 9, 1934 in Portage la Prairie, spending the early part of his childhood in Assinaboia, Sk. After high school he served in the Fourth Regiment of RCHA as a Gunner stationed in PEI and Europe, as well as a Bombardier in the 26th Field Regiment in Portage. Upon returning to Portage he met his wife Nina and raised their family.
John was an Electrician by trade and owned Plains City Electric Co. Ltd. together with his father and brother. He was also a volunteer firefighter for 18 years with the City of Portage Fire dept. He was employed with the City of Portage Parks Dept. And after earning his Power Engineering trade was employed with Government Services as building manager, until health problems forced his retirement. In his retirement Dad began woodworking creating many wooden toys and models, bringing enjoyment to his kids and grandkids.
Dad also enjoyed fishing at Fred & Florence's cabin at Rocky Lake, telling fish tales about "the one that got away, his model trains, taking care of the yard and growing roses with Mom.
Visitation will be held on Friday September 23, 2011 at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel from 7:00-8:00pm.
Memorial service will be held Saturday September 24, 2011 at 2:00pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. Private interment to follow.
