Joe Budnick

January 7, 1931 — September 13, 2019

With great sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Joe Budnick at the age of 88 on Friday, September 13, 2019 at the Portage Hospital.

Left to cherish Joe’s memory is his beloved wife Adell of Portage La Prairie.  He will be lovingly remembered by his son Gerry (Angela) Budnick and grandchildren Andrea and David Budnick of Winnipeg; along with his brother Walter Budnick of Mississauga; many nieces, nephews and special friends.  Joe was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Anna Budnick, brother and sisters Olga (Jim) Kutcher, Lilly (Fred) Terrick, Sally (Bill) Terrick, Mary (Mike) Moskal and Fred (Maureen) Budnick.

Joe was born in Alonsa, Manitoba on the family farm on January 7, 1931.  At a young age he gave up on going to school to work on the farm.  In his late teens Joe held various jobs away from home including cutting pulp, construction and food processing.  He stayed on the family farm until it was sold in 1963.  In 1963 he purchased a bowling alley and dance hall in Plumas, Manitoba.  He met his wife in Plumas and they were married shortly after this.  In 1965 their son Gerry was born.   In the summer’s Joe also kept himself busy doing general contracting work and driving gravel trucks.  The bowling alley and dance hall were sold in 1977 and he spent the rest of his working career in a painting business.  Joe retired in 1991 and with his wife retired to Portage La Prairie in 2000.  Joe was diagnosed with Kidney failure in 2004 and they moved to Morden in 2012 to start Kidney Dialysis.  In 2015, Joe and Adell moved back to Portage La Prairie when he could access Dialysis treatments at the local Hospital.  Joe’s pride and joy was his grandchildren Andrea and David.

Joe enjoyed the outdoors, which included camping, hunting and fishing.  In the summer, Joe and his family travelled on family vacations.

Throughout Joe’s life his primary focus was to ensure his family was well looked after. Joe was grateful for people helping and even on his last days he strived to say “thanks for everything”

The family sincerely thanks everyone, the doctors and nursing staff of the Portage Hospital for providing him with excellent care.  Particularly, we thank all of the nursing staff in the Kidney Dialysis unit where Joe spent three days a week and regarded them as part of his extended family.

Memorial Service will take place at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Saturday September 21, 2019 at 2 pm, led by Father Gerald Langevin.   Prior to the service, the family will have interment at the Hillside Cemetery.

As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Joe’s memory to The Kidney Foundation of Canada, MB Branch, Unit 1-452 Dovercourt Drive, Winnipeg, MB, R3Y 1G4.
