With sadness we announce on Thursday July 6th 2023, Isabel Hicks passed away peacefully at the Lions Prairie Manor at the age of 80 years.
Predeceased by her husband Ross in 2018. Isabel is survived by; daughter Pam (Bob) Taylor with grandchildren Kaelyn (Josh) Stanley, Lane (Brooke) and Brett (Kayleigh), son Daryl (Tamara) Hicks with grandchildren Alex (Kristy) great grandson Bennett; great granddaughter Harlie; grandson Dominic; sister Helen (Mel) Hicks; sister Fern (Bob) Thompson; brother Glen (Joanne) Pettypiece; sister-in-law Helen Hicks; sister-in-law Myrna Dring, and other extended family and friends.
Isabel was born August 19th 1942 in the Killarney area. She was the second of 4 children to Alec and Lillian Pettypiece. She met Ross and they were married on October 15th, 1960. Together they owned and operated the Hi-way Lunch restaurant in Boissevain, Ross was the cook and Isabel waitressed and did all the pies and baking. After that they moved to Brandon where Isabel worked in the banking industry. It was here that they started their family, Daryl in 1965 and Pam in 1967. In 1977 Ross and Isabel made a big decision and moved to Portage la Prairie where they started Delta Home Furnishings with partners Zenen and Marlene Parfeniuk. She was always the one to decorate and set up the furniture displays and this carried on to their own home where each room had to be set up just so.
Family was very important to Isabel; she was devoted to her family and friends. Isabel’s greatest happiness was her grandchildren. She never missed a sporting event, from baseball to hockey to horse jumping, to dance recitals. This started in squirt hockey and followed all the way through Lane’s junior hockey career with the Portage Terriers, never missing a home game. Golfing, baking and playing cards were some of her favourite things to do. She was a fabulous card player, but always seemed to let Brett cheat to win. She would often show up after school with fresh cinnamon buns still hot from the oven. Let’s not forget her other “hobbies”, dusting, vacuuming and washing the floors, you could LITERALLY eat off them.
Isabel and Ross enjoyed travelling together either on their own or with their fabulous group of friends.
We wish to extend our sincere thanks to the staff at Lions Prairie Manor (Parkside) where Isabel spent the last year, your kindness did not go unnoticed.
As per Isabel’s wishes, the family will celebrate her life privately with a graveside internment at a later date at the Evergreen Memorial Gardens Columbarium.
If friends so wish, donations in memory of Isabel can be made to the Lions Prairie Manor Foundation, 24 - 9th Street NE, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 3V4.
A tree will be planted and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
