Mary Irene Elizabeth Corbett

nee Handford

On Friday, May 13, 2016, Irene Corbett age 98, beloved wife of the late Jack Corbett, dear mother of Mary Ann (Bill) and Jim, and devoted grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at her residence at Hillcrest Place in Brandon, MB.

Irene was born August 6, 1917 in Snowflake, MB completing the family of Gertrude and Luther Handford. She grew up on the farm with her sister Hazel and brother Gordon. She attended school in Snowflake and by all accounts was a good student and superb softball player.  After she completed schooling she worked for a time at the local general store, walking five miles to and from work.

She moved to Winnipeg to attend Success Business College and after graduation she accepted a position in the office of the T. Eaton Company where she worked until her marriage on June 27, 1942 to Jack Corbett.  He was employed by the Canadian Pacific Railway as a telegrapher and then later a station agent.

They lived in Snowflake, Clearwater, Napinka and Portage la Prairie in Manitoba, and Wapella, Saskatchewan.  In every community where they lived Irene was an active participant in her church whether in women’s groups or being a leader in children or youth groups. She was also involved in other community activities.  She enjoyed curling and going to other towns with her team to participate in bonspiels.

Their last work related move was to Portage la Prairie where they resided for 38 years.  Along with her church activities she volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the Hospital Auxiliary.  Irene also enjoyed weekly bridge games and social time with her friends. She loved to entertain and was a fabulous cook.  Their home was always filled with love, laughter and good conversation.

In December 2006, Irene and Jack moved to their final home at Hillcrest Place in Brandon.

Jack and Irene had two children, Mary Ann (Bill) and Jim, four granddaughters, two grandsons, and five great-grandchildren.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Mary Egan and the Hillcrest staff for the exceptional care given to Irene over the years.  If friends so desire, donations may be made in Irene’s memory to the Hillcrest Recreation Department, 930 26th St. Brandon, MB, R7B 2B8.

At Irene’s request a family graveside service will take place at the Crystal City Cemetery.

A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.  204-857-4021
