After a brief illness, Herbert “Herb” Bagnall passed away peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital on September 13, 2024, at the age of 83 years.
Left to treasure his memory are his children: Anne Louise Angelo (Steven) of New York, Brian Herbert Bagnall of Winnipeg, and Kevin Neil Bagnall (Mary Feng) of Winnipeg. Herb was also dearly loved by his grandchildren: Maryn, Grady, and Elizabeth. He is survived by his sisters, Helen Bagnall (John Christopher) of Camas, Washington, and Dianne Noto (Don) of Brandon, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Herb was predeceased by his beloved wife, Evelyn, his parents, Ernest and Elizabeth, and his brother, Robin.
Born on August 18, 1941, in Carberry, Manitoba, Herb grew up on a farm near Sidney, helping raise beef cattle and grow grain. His childhood was filled with the simple joys of rural life, such as ice hockey on the local lake, curling, baseball, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, 4-H, and attending a one-room schoolhouse. After graduating from Sidney high school, Herb taught at Elk Ranch School and then Flin Flon before deciding to further his education at the University of Manitoba, where he earned a degree in Agriculture. It was during his time at university that he met his future wife, Evelyn McKenzie. They married in 1967 and initially moved to the Toronto area, where Herb briefly worked at the Toronto Dominion Bank. However, their hearts belonged in Manitoba, and they returned when Herb began working for the Farm Credit Corporation, where he dedicated his career until retiring at age 53.
Herb and Evelyn began their family in 1970 and lived on Deloraine Drive. Herb was deeply committed to his family's happiness, planning memorable summer vacations with his sister in-law's family, the Lawries from Alberta. In 1988, tragedy struck when Evelyn passed away after a battle with cancer. Herb continued living in their family home until his children graduated and moved away.
Throughout his adult life, Herb was a competitive curler and golfer. After retiring, he pursued a second career as a freelance land appraiser, cultivated a passion for reading, and frequently traveled across the United States in his "gypsy van" RV. Herb was a pillar of strength to his family, and he cherished every moment spent with his loved ones.
Herb will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
