With much sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Helen Smith on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 97.

Predeceased by husband Grenville, daughter Sherry Klassen, great grandson Aaron Tarr, parents Jens and Janet Faurschou, siblings Ralph Faurschou and wife Ella, Gerald Faurschou and wife Pat, Joyce Lyall and Audrey Faurschou.  Helen will be lovingly remembered by her children, Harvey (Radhika), Brian (Dawn), Donna (Michael) Tarr, grandchildren Ryan, Sharalyn, Candace (Jack), Kristin (Reid), Trinidee, Hudson, Blake (Jade), Curtis (Kara), Jared, Janelle (Jay), great grandchildren Charleston, Weston, Corbin, Lincoln, Madison, Brooke, Cole, Landon, London, Ayah, Logan, Bryant, Charlotte, and Koven, great great granddaughter Rory,  brother-in- law Roy Lyall and many nieces and nephews who were very dear to her.

Helen was born at Lakeview, Manitoba.  She attended both Hollywood School and Langruth High School before attending the Winnipeg Success Commercial College. She then went on to be employed by Northern Life.  On June 5, 1950 Helen and Grenville were married in a double wedding along with her sister Joyce and Roy Lyall.  Helen and Gren resided on the farm north of Portage where they raised their 4 children.  Helen spent many years active in the Ruth Rebekah Lodge #3, St Mary’s la Prairie Anglican Church, Herman Prior Senior Centre and the United Church women’s group.  Helen’s primary focus was raising her family and helping out with the farm.  Her pastimes included gardening, cooking and traveling.  She spent many happy times at the family cottage at Delta, and traveled all across Canada and the United States with her many friends.  Helen lived on the family farm until she moved into Windsor Estates in 2003 where she resided until her passing.

Helen had the ability to make everyone feel important and loved.  She was generous and thoughtful, always putting everyone else’s needs before her own.  She was dedicated to remembering everyone’s birthday and special occasion.  Her strength in difficult times, and her positive attitude were an inspiration to those who knew her.

The family would like to thank Dr. Warelis and the staff at Portage General Hospital for their care and compassion.  Also special thanks to her friend Judy who provided care and friendship to mom.

A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel at 1 pm, led by John Dolloff.  Interment will take place at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made to St Mary’s la Prairie Anglican Church 36-2nd St.SW, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 2A1 or a charity of one’s choice.
