Helen was predeceased by her husband Calvin in 2003, sister Marion Wood, brothers and sister in laws Murray (Sherri), Lorne (Jean), and John Common, brother in law Fred (Francis) Harvey.
Helen was born March 2, 1926 in RM of Daly, Manitoba. She received her education in Bradwardine and for a period of time taught school on a permit in Wheatland Manitoba. In October 1947 she married Calvin her devoted husband of 57 years. They lived in several small communities throughout the province as Dad was a grain buyer for Manitoba Pool elevators. The majority of her years were spent in Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg. Mom held different jobs throughout her life and truly enjoyed her work as a Dental assistant and caretaker of her apartment building. Most of all, her favourite job was being a special Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother.
In her younger years she enjoyed curling, fishing, and going on vacations. She also spent many weekends watching her grandson Christopher playing hockey. As she grew older and spent more time at home she became an avid TV watcher of curling, the Bombers, and the Jets.
Mom’s favourite pastimes were gardening and baking for her family, especially her grandchildren. You did not visit without having a treat and some cookies to take home. Her Christmas baking was a major tradition in our family. She enjoyed passing on her delicious recipes to her granddaughters: Tara, Tracy, and Leslie.
She was especially proud of all her grandchildren and great grandchildren and always looked forward to their visits.
Mom was a caring person who touched many lives.
Funeral Service will be held at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Friday, July 10, 2015 at 2:30 pm with Rev. Shirley McLaren officiating.
The family would like to give heartfelt thanks to the staff of 5th Floor South, Misericordia Hospital for the wonderful care they gave Mom in the last four months of her life. We could not have asked for a better facility.
