“South Wind”
Harvey Meeches, beloved grandson, son and brother, passed away unexpectedly on May 30, 2024 at Long Plain First Nation at the age of 43 years, leaving his family and friends profoundly saddened.
Harvey was born in Portage la Prairie, MB on December 21, 1980 to Lorraine Myran (nee Meeches) and Harvey Peters Jr.II, and his cherished Koko Delores, and grew up in Long Plain First Nation and Portage la Prairie, MB. Harvey attended Long Plain School. He later spent part of his adult life doing carpentry in the community and harvesting in North Dakota and the area surrounding Portage la Prairie, until his diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis prevented him from working in labouring positions.
Harvey was a loved and cherished grandson to his koko Delores Meeches, who called him “My Boy”, son to Lorraine Myran and the late Harvey Peters, brother to Denise Peters (Terry), Angela Malcolm (Sheldon), Constance Meeches and Travis Meeches. Harvey didn’t have any children, but took his many nieces and nephews whom he cherished, was proud of and always kept close to his heart, as his own. He always said “I have enough kids… all my nieces and nephews!” He will also be missed by his special friends Shirley Longclaws and family, Sterling Dodd, Janelle Beatty and Brenda Meeches. Harvey loved his family, and would make a point of telling them that he loved and appreciated them as often as possible.
Harvey took time to prioritize and find joy with his family and many friends, he had a knack for making friends easily, and was always sure to have fond memories and many stories to share. Everyone Harvey interacted with will be sure to have and hold many privileged stories to share of their fun and joyous times together, he was vibrant, and had a zest for life.
Harvey embodied the qualities of unconditional love, strength of spirit and unending generosity that could be seen in him by his family and friends and the countless others who connected with him.
