Born on September 25, 1925 in Windsor, ON, Hammie was raised in Portage La Prairie, MB. Eager to join his brothers in serving his country, he joined the RCAF at the age of 19 and trained in Winnipeg and Calgary before leaving the Air Force at the end of the War. He graduated with a BSC in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manitoba before re-enlisting in the RCAF in 1951 and serving the next 25 years in the Aeronautical Engineering Branch. He married Audrey in 1953 and they enjoyed postings that took their family across Canada, Germany and England and made them many life-long friends. From 1975 to 1980 Hammie was Commanding Officer of three Canadian Forces Technical Services Agencies, retiring with the rank of Colonel. From 1980 to 1984 he managed the Spar Aerospace Copter Shop (Calgary) before joining Indal Technologies (Mississauga) as the Director of Quality from 1984 until his retirement in 1990.
A life-long curler and avid golfer, he loved music, sports and travel and spent many happy years in his retirement enjoying those pursuits with Audrey and their good friends. He was a kind and caring man, and his quick smile, friendly easy going nature, ready wit, and talent for story telling will be greatly missed by family and friends alike.
