Peacefully, with family by her side, Gwen Turko passed away on Monday, April 14, 2025 at her home in Winnipeg, MB at the age of 81 years.
Gwen was born is Silver Ridge, MB on September 5, 1943 at home on the family farm, and attended Naimandin School. She hated housework, so she was always out in the barn with her dad doing chores. She also worked for a school teacher, looking after her daughter for a couple of years.
In 1964, she met the love of her life, Donald, and they were married seven months later. Gwen & Don lived in Winnipeg for 29 years, where they raised four boys. The family did a lot of camping, fishing and waterskiing. Gwen loved to crochet, and she made many afgans for her family. She also enjoyed ceramics. She upgraded her education, and took a small business course at home through correspondence, and also worked at A&W for 4 years.
In 1993, they moved back to the farm where Gwen was born. She was right back to her love of doing chores and being Don’s shadow. We worked long hours, side by side for many years. Sometimes when we got in, we were too tired to cook – we ate a lot of Corn Flakes for supper. Gwen loved all of the animals and birds they had, especially the babies. She hated picking stones and opening gates. Gwen hoped someone up there would open the gate for her when the time came.
Gwen is survived by her husband Don, sons Don (Debbie), Darryl (Barbie), Calvin (Traci) and Owen (Colette), grandchildren Donald, John (Melissa), Isabelle (Matthew), Victoria, Chelsea, Jessica, Angela and Kyle, great grandsons Hunter, Emmett and Beau, sisters Darlene, Judy and Tina, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Lawrence and Molly Demerais, sister Patsy (Jimmy), brother James ‘Buddy’, and brothers-in-law Tommy, Angus, Colin and Paul.
Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 17th, 2025 at 1:00 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
