In the early morning hours of March 6, 2025 Gloria Hooper passed away with her family by her side in St. Claude, MB at the age of 74 years.
Left cherishing her memory is her husband of 40 plus years Clint, daughter Ashley (Adam), granddaughter Kara, grandson Kasen; brother Albert (Rhonda), sister Wilma (Boomer), niece Nadine (Trent), nephew Shane (Loni), nephew Tyler, nephew Graham (Brittany), niece Terinda, and niece Nikoda (Kolton) and great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved son Chris, her baby sister Sandra and her parents Gregor and Lena. She joins them now in peace.
Gloria grew up on the farm in Shell Valley, Mb; the first of four kids. Gloria was your typical farm kid, growing up helping with chores or watching her younger siblings. Mom had Chris, and for several years was a single mother. During this time , Mom decided to move to The Pas and attend school to become an LPN. This is where Mom met Dad; and then the best thing in their life happened… their daughter Ashley. In 1985, Clint convinced Gloria to move from The Pas and they moved to Holland, Mb to run the Hollander Motor Inn. Mom missed nursing though, and soon went back to work, working in Swan Lake. From Holland, they moved to St Claude where they lived for over 30 years. Mom was a nurse until 1996, when she had to retire due to a back injury. Mom went back to cooking; cooking at the commercial Inn, Ray and Al’s and the Club. Gloria also bartended for many years at the Armouries in Portage, and was well known and loved by 19 RCACC where she worked as a Supply officer for many years.
After Chris’ death in 1996, Mom was bestowed the honour of becoming Silver cross mother. She took this role very seriously. In 2023, she became the National Silver Cross Mother and attended services in Ottawa.
Mom was a huge source of support for Ashley and her grandkids (Kara and Kasen) She was so proud of them. She loved being a Baba and would spoil the kids anytime she could. In her later years, Mom fought against cancer and dementia. However, whenever she saw her grandkids, she was immediately happy.
The family would like to thank everyone at the St. Claude Health Centre for all their compassionate care. Also the outpouring of support from the community. Another heartfelt thanks goes to Father Peter who attended to Mom before her peaceful passing.
A celebration of Gloria’s life will take place at the St. Claude Community Centre on Wednesday, March 12, 2025 at 1:00 pm, led by Amy Chappellaz. The service will be livestreamed and can be viewed on her obituary page at www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com. Internment will be held at a later date in Shell Valley.
