Glen James Hourie

With great sadness we regret to announce the passing of Glen James Hourie on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 in his home in Portage la Prairie. He was 71 years old. Glen was predeceased by his beloved parents Harold and Lillian Hourie, his sister Patricia Hourie, his niece Donna McDonald, his brother-in -law Edward McDonald and his Niece-in-Law Sonya McDonald.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Kimberly Hourie of Portage, his son Brent (Janel) Hourie of Winnipeg, three beautiful granddaughters Shaylynn Purkess-Hourie of Treherne, Brielle and Baylee Hourie of Winnipeg.  His sisters Norma (Bob) Beckingham of Selkirk and Joan McDonald of Brandon, and his brother Craig (Louise) Hourie of Portage; nephews David, Ted (Gail), Jeff (Vivian), Doug (Janet), Daryl (Karen), Nick (Debra) and Bobby (Rebecca) and many cousins, great nieces, great nephew,  golf and hockey buds and many friends near and far. Special friends Billy Kitching, Rene Ladouceur, Terry Semrick, Ricky Bridges and Bobby Burke were lifelong close friends of Glen. Glen was also a godfather to Michael Bridges.

Glen was born and raised in Portage la Prairie and lived here all his life, he was a proud Portager. He attended Victoria School and completed grade 12 at Arthur Meighan High School. He was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church. He worked for many years as a wholesale stock and delivery man for Rogers & Sons, Hudson’s Bay Wholesale, Red Carpet and The Portage Wholesale from which he retired in 2009. He enjoyed working with Ida Miller and Anne Street, the Millers were his work family. He and Edith Johnston had adopted Kimberly and Brent in 1976 and 1979. He was very proud of them both and expressed that these along with the births of his 3 grandbabies were the happiest moments of his life. Glen had suffered with diabetes for the latter half of his life and still managed to get up almost every morning and be able to say to anyone that asked how he was “Hey, hey, the eyes opened this morning, I’m perfect!”

Glen was an avid golfer and member at Southport Golf Club for around 30 years, his sister Patricia taught him how to play and it was a great love of his life. Glen was fortunate to get a Hole- in- One at the Portage Golf Course during a tournament on August 12th, 1998 on hole #12 which was a par 3 at 136 yards. Glen was a lifelong hockey fan, season ticket holder for the Portage Terriers for as long as he could remember (Go Terriers!); he was also a die-hard Toronto Maple Leaf’s fan from a very young age. He spent many hours watching anything going on at the Portage Arena and the PCU Centre. Glen had also enjoyed bowling in the last few years at the Southport Bowling Alley, and had also curled. He enjoyed going for his several daily walks around town and had many coffee friends and other people that will remember him strolling down the street, smiling away.

A come and go reception to celebrate Glen’s life will be held on Saturday July 23rd from 1-3 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel in Portage la Prairie. Everyone is welcome to attend. A private family scattering of ashes will take place on a future date.
