Gérald Denis Rey

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gérald Denis Rey at the age of 72 years old.

Gérald was predeceased by his loving wife, Suzanne (née Burgoyne); his parents Auguste and Louise (née Carel); mother- and father-in-law Gérald and Marie-Louise (née Dupasquier) Burgoyne; siblings Madeleine Rey, Augustine Rey, Odile Debreuil, and Denis Rey; and brothers- and sister-in-law Roger Debreuil, Gérald Hébert, and Marielle (née Charrière) Burgoyne.

He is lovingly remembered by his daughters Annik (Bill) and Nathalie; grandchildren Cameron, Owen, Essa, and Nolan; siblings Aline (Gérald) Bourrier, Robert (Cécilia) Rey, and Hélène (Christian) Françoise; brothers- and sisters-in-law Marguerite Rey, Lionel Burgoyne, Gisèle (Larry) Hébert, Bob (Patricia) Burgoyne, Ron (Cindy) Burgoyne, and Roger (Jacqueline) Burgoyne; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends that held a special place in his heart.

The youngest of 8, Gérald was born in 1951 and started school in his hometown of St. Claude before graduating at Collège de St. Boniface. He furthered his education and received his Bachelor of Arts and Certificate in Education. Gérald began his career as a teacher in 1973 at St. Claude School Complex, where he remained for 34 years. His gifts of patience and reflection are what made him a great teacher and mentor - teaching was his calling and he loved doing it.

In the summer of 1974, Gérald married the love of his life, Suzanne. For 41 years they were each other’s rock, shelter, and horizon. They built a relationship that one could only dream of - full of laughs, affection, trust, and serenity. Their love was deep and ever-lasting. The birth of their children, and ultimately grandchildren, only nurtured this connection. Family was of utmost importance to them, until the very end.

Gérald was well-known around St. Claude as M. Rey, but to his grandchildren, he was Buddy. His relationship with us was all-encompassing – from dancing to blues music on the deck, to his famous well-thought-out talks – he was always there for us. Buddy had a heart of gold and was steadfast in his love for us. His rich wisdom will serve us well in life, as we continue to do our best to make him proud.

Dad was our North Star. Our hero, our compass, our inspiration, our guide. He was the constant that we could depend on in our life as the world changed around us. This change, however, will be our biggest one as we now must navigate this world without you. Dad, we will continue to make you proud, talk about you and your never-ending love for us. Though, most of all, we will remember that you are always right beside us, helping us deal with our tremendous loss.

Aside from his passion for teaching, Gérald was an active member in his community. His dedication to the prosperity of St. Claude and the promotion of French culture was evident. Gérald was a long-standing member of St. Claude’s tourism committee, where he volunteered many hours to various community-led sites. He was a master of the French language and contributed to the development of the St. Claude Families book as the resident translator. For over 20 years, Gérald was a volunteer firefighter in town and was awarded the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal. He could often be found at St. Claude’s curling rink or fairgrounds playing baseball.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the St. Claude Community Centre on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at 1 pm.  A private interment will take place at the St. Claude Cemetery. The service was recorded and can be viewed below, long with the slideshow.

C’est avec une grande tristesse que nous annonçons le décès de Gérald Denis Rey à l’âge de 72 ans.

Gérald a été précédé dans la mort par son épouse aimante, Suzanne (née Burgoyne); ses parents, Auguste et Louise (née Carel); ses beaux-parents, Gérald et Marie-Louise (née Dupasquier) Burgoyne; ses sœurs et son frère, Madeleine Rey, Augustine Rey, Odile Debreuil et Denis Rey; ses beaux-frères et sa belle-sœur, Roger Debreuil, Gérald Hébert et Marielle (née Charrière) Burgoyne.

Il laisse dans le deuil ses filles, Annik (Bill) et Nathalie; ses petits-enfants, Cameron, Owen, Essa et Nolan; ses sœurs et son frère, Aline (Gérald) Bourrier, Robert (Cécilia) Rey et Hélène (Christian) Françoise; ses beaux-frères et belles-sœurs, Marguerite Rey, Lionel Burgoyne, Gisèle (Larry) Hébert, Bob (Patricia) Burgoyne, Ron (Cindy) Burgoyne et Roger (Jacqueline) Burgoyne; et nombreux neveux, nièces, famille et amis qui tenaient une place spéciale dans son cœur.

Le plus jeune de 8, Gérald est né en 1951 et a commencé l’école à Saint-Claude avant d’obtenir son diplôme au Collège de Saint-Boniface. Il a poursuivi ses études et a reçu son baccalauréat ès arts et certificat en éducation. Gérald a commencé sa carrière comme enseignant en 1973 au complexe scolaire Saint-Claude, où il est resté pendant 34 ans. Ses dons de patience et de réflexion ont fait de lui un bon enseignant et mentor.

En été 1974, Gérald a épousé l’amour de sa vie, Suzanne. Pendant 41 ans, ils ont été l’appui, l’abri et l’horizon de l’autre. Ils ont construit une relation dont on ne pouvait que rêver – pleine de rires, d’affection, de confiance et de sérénité. Leur amour était profond et durable. La naissance de leurs enfants et en fin de leurs petits-enfants, n’a fait qu’approfondir ce lien. La famille était de la plus haute importance pour eux, jusqu’à la toute fin.

Gérald était bien connu autour de Saint-Claude comme M. Rey, mais pour ses petits-enfants il était Buddy. Sa relation avec nous était omniprésente – de la danse à la musique blues sur le deck, en passant par ses fameuses conversations bien-pensées – il était toujours là pour nous. Sa riche sagesse nous servira bien dans la vie, alors que nous continuons de faire de notre mieux pour le rendre fier.

Dad était notre étoile polaire. Notre héros, notre boussole, notre inspiration, notre guide. Il était un constant sur lequel nous pouvions compter dans notre vie alors que le monde changeait autour de nous. Ce changement sera notre plus grand, car nous devons maintenant naviguer dans ce monde sans vous. Dad, nous continuerons à te rendre fier, à parler de toi et de ton amour éternel pour nous. Cependant, par-dessus tout, nous nous souviendrons que vous êtes toujours à côté de nous, nous aidant à faire face à notre perte.

En plus de sa passion pour l’enseignement, Gérald était un membre actif de sa communauté. Son dévouement à la prospérité de Saint-Claude et à la promotion de la culture française était évident. Gérald a été un membre long-terme du comité de tourisme de Saint-Claude, où il a fait du bénévolat dans divers sites communautaires. Maître de la langue française, il a contribué au développement du livre des familles de Saint-Claude en tant que traducteur. Pendant plus de 20 ans, Gérald a été pompier volontaire et a reçu la médaille de pompiers pour services distingués. On pouvait souvent le trouver à la piste de curling de Saint-Claude, ou au champ de foire en train de jouer au baseball.

Une célébration de sa vie aura lieu au centre communautaire de Saint-Claude le mercredi 2 août à 13h. Un internement privé aura lieu au cimetière St. Claude.  Le service a été enregistré et peut être visionné ci-dessous, accompagné du diaprama.
