Geert "George" Scheper

We grieve the loss of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Geert "George" Scheper, who passed away peacefully on August 19th, 2011 at Park Manor in Winnipeg, at the age of 85.

He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Lammigje, and his second wife, Ruby. George will be lovingly remembered by his two sons William (Ricki) and Simon (Jessie); many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Also mourned by his only surviving sister Geertje (Roelof) Eggens, of the Netherlands, and extended family in both Canada and the Netherlands.

He came to Canada in 1967, first residing in Carman, Manitoba, and later settling in Portage la Prairie, where he was well known as the owner of 'George's Smoke Shop'.

As children and grandchildren, we were often treated to dinner with Dad and Grandpa. He always loved to see us and his quirky Dutch-English expressions were cause for many to chuckle.

After his retirement in Portage la Prairie, Dad would always visit with his friends in the mall, having coffee and taking his morning walk. Even after his fall, when his mind was frail, his face would light up when he saw his sons, and the few people he still recognized. Though confined to his wheel chair, he always had plans to travel, announcing to us that he would be leaving shortly on a journey to Holland.

We will miss you Dad and Grandpa, but you will not be forgotten.

Visitation and viewing will be held on Monday, August 22, 2011 from 7 to 8pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. A Memorial Service will take place on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at 2:30 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel led by Rev. Rolf denHollander. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
