Freda Camilla Tomchuk (VanAchte)
March 10, 1934 – October 26, 2015
Loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother,
great grandmother, aunt and friend.
Peacefully on Monday October 26, 2015 Freda passed away at the Portage & District General Hospital, after a brief illness at the age of 81.
Freda was born in Swan Lake Manitoba March 10 th , 1934 to Cyril and Julia VanAchte. She spent her early years living at Bruxelles Manitoba in the St. Alphonse Convent with her two sisters, Cleda and Audrey and brother David. In her late teens, she moved to Portage La Prairie and worked at Dicks Café where she met the love of her life, Joe Tomchuk.
They were married November 9 th , 1951 and moved to the farm in Rossendale. There they raised three sons; Kerry, Kelly and Jules. Later, Freda proudly attained her Health Care Aide certificate and worked for Home Care for several years, which she thoroughly enjoyed.
In her early years Freda loved curling and playing ball and later; playing bingo, trips to the casino, playing cards, Yahtzee and bowling in the Spooner League of which she was president for several years. Freda was an avid fisherman and she and Joe enjoyed many trips to Northern Manitoba lakes with family, friends and Grandchildren. Freda’s greatest joy in life came from being surrounded by her family and many close friends.
Freda was predeceased by her sisters Audrey Krizak, Irma Kastle and her brother David VanAchte as well as the sad passing of her middle son Kelly Tomchuk. Freda is survived by her beloved husband Joe of 63 years, her devoted sister Cleda (Joe) Vatrt, sons Kerry (Dixie), Jules (Jennifer). She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Janelle (Richard), Jennifer (Greg), Stephanie (Trevor), Sydney (friend Jayd), Candice (Keith), Alicia, Krystal, Joe, Jillian and her great grandchildren Brae-Lynn, Rayah, Avie and Harper.
A committal service will take place at Rossendale Cemetery on Friday, October 30, 2015 at 11:00 am. Memorial service will be held Friday, October 30, 2015 at 3:00 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel led by Wilma Shirriff.
As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Freda’s memory to Central Plains Cancer Care Services, 318 E Saskatchewan Ave, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8 or to Rossendale United Church, PO Box 100, Rossendale, MB, R0H 1C0
