Floyd McCowan Miller
Peacefully, in the early hours of August 14, 2017, Floyd Miller, beloved husband of Opal, passed away at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 78 years.
Floyd was born in Portage la Prairie to Rob and Jean Miller on November 24, 1938. He grew up on the family farm in Fortier and also attended the Fortier country school. After ending his formal education he went to work for his father on the family farm.
In 1960, Floyd met his best friend Opal Gilmour, who he married in 1963. Floyd and Opal were blessed with two children, and later in life two grandchildren.
In 1970 Floyd took over the family farm and successfully farmed until the early 80’s when he decided to sell the farm. He then moved with his family to Brandon where he worked in the automotive industry until his retirement in 1995.
After retirement Floyd and Opal developed their retirement property back in the Fortier District. Once his home was complete Floyd, not one to sit idle, enjoyed getting back into agriculture by working at Darcy’s seed plant with Darcy and Bob Miller for a number of years. Thereafter he continued his retirement at his Fortier home until his passing.
Floyd was a private man and his life was his work and his family. When not working in earlier years he enjoyed camping and fishing trips with the family. Later for many years, before retirement, he enjoyed family times with kids, grandkids, and dogs at the family cabin near Clear Lake.
Floyd is survived by his wife Opal, sons Jim (Susan) and Ken, grandsons Bradley (Jaleesa) and Steven (Olivia), “grand dog” Bear, sister-in-law Shirley Gilmour, special niece Darlene (Barry) and great nephew Brendan Blue and niece & nephew Donna (Jim) McKenzie and Darryl Gilmour (Taya) as well as numerous cousins.
Floyd was predeceased by his parents Robert and Jean Miller and in-laws Hamilton and Irene Gilmour.
“Although his face may not be seen amongst us today, his love is felt in all the hearts he touched along the way.”
Memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel at 1:00 pm led by Shirley McLaren. A private family interment will take place at Austin cemetery.
