Errol 'Wesley' Peters

August 20, 1957 — June 6, 2018

Suddenly, on June 6, 2018 Wes Peters passed away at his home in Long Plain First Nation at the age of 60 years.

Wes is predeceased by his daughter Trina Lynn Peters, parents Mary Evelyn & Robert Wallace Peters, sister Pamela Peters (Pammy), step-sisters Ruby and Marilyn, grandparents Helen & Wallace Peters and Annie & Harry Myerion Sr..

Left to mourn his passing are his sons Bobby Peters (Melanie) and  Jeremy Peters (Lucy), daughter Shaundre Assiniboine, his cherished grandchildren, his siblings Maureen (Bob), Debra, Barry (Sherry), Sandra (Chuggy), Roland, Reynold  and  Jennifer (Jay), step-brothers and sisters Wayne, Garry, Charles, Michael, Betty and Darlene and step-father Wallace Meeches, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Wes started working at 16 years of age with CP Rail, remaining  there until he was 18.  He then upgraded his education through Adult Ed and continued on to the University of Winnipeg and Red River Community College, getting degrees in both accounting and applied counselling,  which led him to his job as an addictions counsellor at the St. Norbert Foundation where he worked for many years.  In January 1997,  he returned to Long Plain First Nation where he worked as  a Researcher/Facilitator for the Loss of Use Land Claims until February of 2000.  He then became a Community Liaison Coordinator, Loss of Use Land Claims from July 2006 to May 2013 and a Researcher for the 1916 Land Surrender Land Claim from February 2014 to November 2017.  He was also a Member for the 1916 Land Surrender Committee since negotiations began with the Federal Government in 1999.

Wesley’s devout faith in the Mormon religion remained throughout his life after he found the Lord at theage of  20 and received his confirmation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  He loved to study his bible and remained a believer – his bible was open on the day he died.

Wes enjoyed playing chess and crib with his late uncles Hughie and Harry , his cousins Dennis and Leo and Uncle Glen for countless hours.  He was an avid hockey fan, and enjoyed keeping up with the latest Native issues & politics.  Wes loved to visit with family, sharing stories and laughing over a cup of coffee & dessert.  Papa cherished and doted on his numerous grandchildren and was always proud of each and every one of them. Wes touched a lot of people’s lives, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
